During Romero's funeral ceremony smoke bombs exploded on the streets near the cathedral and subsequently there were rifle shots that came from surrounding buildings. Many people were killed by gunfire and in the stampede of people running away from the explosions and gunfire; official sources reported 31 overall casualties while journalists recorded that between 30 and 50 died.

 213 Die in Toyota Dyna truck bomb explosion in Embassy of the United States, Nairobi, Kenya. Simultaneously a 1987 Nissan Atlas refrigeration truck with TNT attached to fifteen oxygen tanks and gas canisters, surrounded with four bags of ammonium nitrate fertiliser was detonated at the United States embassy in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
