Bilansky requested a private execution but at this point in the 19th century public executions were typical as they served civil and religious purposes to deter crime and demonstrate the danger of sin. The gallows were set up in an enclosure in Court House Square. Around 100 onlookers watched from inside the enclosure while thousands more watched from outside the enclosure.

Unidentified serial killer the Zodiac Killer writes a 7-page letter to the San Francisco Chronicle stating that two policemen stopped and actually spoke with him three minutes after he shot Paul Stine in San Francisco, California, United States. Excerpts from the letter were published in the Chronicle on 12 November including the Zodiac's claim.
