The gallows were dismantled after Austin's execution. Future public hangings were now conducted on a scaffold named the 'new drop' outside Newgate Prison.

Start of the trial against 52-year-old Serial killer Henri Désiré Landru aka Le Barbe-Bleue de Gambais in 3 Place André Mignot, Versailles, Île-de-France, France.

Among the audience of Landru's trial were actors Mistinguette and Maurice Chevalier, writer Colette and a huge number of women from the bourgeoisie. Special trains known as the 'Landru Spécial' were run from Paris Invalides station to arrive in Versailles in time for the hearings. "Une exhibition de fourrures, chinchillas et zibelines, des bras nus, des poitrines décolletées; des chairs nacrées, des colliers de perles, des lèvres trop rouges réprimant mal des petits rires fusants; un public venu là poussé par une sorte d'attirance morbide; la Cour d'assises a l'aspect  pittoresque d'un dancing." 29-year-old Ernst Eduard vom Rath is shot five times by assassin of Ernst vom Rath Herschel Grynszpan in Hôtel Beauharnais, Paris, VIIe, Île-de-France, France.

Vom Rath died two days later in hospital. Grynszpan was theorized to have been acquainted with vom Rath before the shooting. According to this theory vom Rath was homosexual and had met Grynszpan in the Paris bar Le Boeuf sur le Toit. Vom Rath had supposedly promised to use his influence to legalize Grynszpan's French residency. When vom Rath reneged on his promise Grynszpan went to the embassy and shot him.

School shooter Pekka-Eric Auvinen known for the Jokela school shooting commits suicide by a shot in the head at the age of 18 in Jokela High School, Jokela, Uusimaa, Finland.

Auvinen killed eight people and wounded one person in the toe before shooting himself in the head with a SIG Mosquito .22 calibre semi-automatic pistol, twelve others were also injured by flying shattered glass or sprained ankles. The dead were 17-year-old Sameli 'Same' Nurmi, 17-year-old Mika Petteri Pulkkinen, 18-year-old Ari Juhani Palsanen, 25-year-old Hanna Katariina Laaksonen Kinnunen, 43-year-old nurse Sirkka Anneli Kaarakka, 17-year-old Mikko Tapani 'Mikkous' Hiltunen, 16-year-old Ville Valtteri 'Viltsi' Heinonen and 61-year-old head teacher Helena Kalmi. Before setting off on his rampage Auvinen uploaded a file package containing 21 media files to the internet. It contained pictures of himself, his firearm, Jokela High School, one undisclosed music file and three documents in Finnish and English. The longest text was the 'Manifesto of the Natural Selector' in which Auvinen explained his thoughts and rationale behind the shooting.
