Compton attempted to strangle 26-year-old Kim Breed in a motel in Bellingham in an attempt to have authorities believe that the Hillside Strangler was still on the loose and the wrong man was imprisoned. Hillside Strangler Kenneth Bianchi had given her some smuggled semen to use to make it look like a rape/murder committed by the Hillside Strangler.

Thomas Rainwater is shot dead by murder gang The Black Zebra Killers aka The Death Angels at the age of 20 in Salvation Army School for Officers' Training Center, 1450 Laguna Street, San Francisco, California, United States.

Rainwater's 21-year old companion Linda Story was also shot but survived.
