United States Air Force pilot Francis Gary Powers dies in a Bell 206 Jet Ranger helicopter crash at the age of 48 in Sepulveda Dam, Encino, California, United States. The National Transportation Safety Board report attributed the probable cause of Powers' crash to a pilot error of poor fuel management.
