Singer-songwriter Hank Hiram King Williams aka Luke the Drifter aka The Hillbilly Shakespeare aka The Singing Kid dies of a drug overdose at the age of 30 in Pure Oil Gas Station, 611 Main Street, Oak Hill, West Virginia, United States. Williams hired college student Charles Carr to drive him to a concert on New Year's Day at the Windsor Theater in Canton, Ohio when Williams was discovered unresponsive in the back seat. The only items found in the backseat of Williams' 1952 Cadillac were a few cans of beer and the hand-written lyrics to an unrecorded song 'Then Came that Fateful Day'. The cause of death was heart failure caused by the combination of alcohol, morphine and chloral hydrate. |
