Five crewmen successfully ejected or bailed out of the aircraft and landed safely, another ejected but did not survive the landing and two died in the crash. The dead were 35-year-old Sergeant Francis Roger Barnish, 42-year-old Major Eugene Holcombe Richards and 41-year-old Major Eugene Shelton. Bomb disposal expert responsible for disarming the device Jack Revelle claimed "we came damn close" to a nuclear detonation that would have completely changed much of eastern North Carolina.

Murderer James L. Riggins is executed by hanging at the age of 26 in United States Disciplinary Barracks, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, United States. The drop didn't break Riggins' neck, he slowly suffocated for eighteen minutes and forty seconds.
