Bartsch was an illegitimate child whose birth mother died of tuberculosis soon afterward, and he spent the first months of his life being cared for by nurses. At 11 months he was adopted by a butcher and his wife in Langenberg, who gave him the name Jürgen Bartsch.

52-year-old murderer and cannibal Adolph Luetgert, originally Adolph Ludwig Lütgert aka The Sausage King kills his 40-year-old wife Louisa Bicknese in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Luetgert probably mixed Louisa's remains in the meat at his sausage company. Metatarsal bones, a toe phalanx, rib and head were found in the furnace.
