Miyazaki sat alongside the girl for a half-hour before murdering her. He then engaged in sexual acts with the corpse and left her corpse in the hills near his home. He allowed Konno's corpse to decompose for a while before later returning to remove the hands and feet which he kept in his closet. He charred her remaining bones in his furnace, ground them into powder and sent them to her family in a box along with several of her teeth, photos of her clothes and a postcard which read: "Mari. Cremated. Bones. Investigate. Prove."

46-year-old Vietnam veteran and peace activist Brian Willson is hit by a train while engaged in a railroad tracks blocking protest with members of a Veterans Peace Action Team against the shipping of U.S. weapons to Central America in Concord Naval Weapons Station, Concord, California, United States. An approaching train did not stop and struck the protesting veterans. Willson was hit and lost both legs below the knee while suffering a severe skull fracture with loss of his right frontal lobe.
