Mansfield, her 40-year-old lover Sam Brody, their 20-year-old driver Ronnie Harrison, and three of her children - 8-year-old Miklós Jeffrey Palmer Hargitay, 6-year-old Zoltán Anthony Hargitay and 3-year-old Mariska Magdalena Hargitay were heading for New Orleans where she was scheduled to appear for an early-morning television interview. The 1966 Buick Electra 225, which was reportedly going 80 miles per hour, crashed into the rear of a tractor-trailer that had slowed down because of a truck spraying mosquito fogger. The three adults in the front seat were killed instantly; the children in the rear survived with minor injuries.

Steve Boca is attacked by serial killer The Axeman of New Orleans in Elysian Fields Avenue, New Orleans, Louisiana, United States.

Boca was attacked in his bedroom as he slept. Upon regaining consciousness he ran to the street to investigate the intrusion and found that his head had been cracked open.
