Thirteen survived the initial impact, including the first officer (co-pilot) and one flight attendant, but three of them ultimately died from severe burn injuries. One of the initial survivors died of injuries 29 days after the accident. While investigating this accident the NTSB reviewed the cockpit voice recorder and found that the flight crew engaged in unnecessary and 'nonpertinent' conversation during the approach phase of the flight, discussing subjects "ranging from politics to used cars."

Gerold 'Gero' Hermann Johannes Edler von Braunmühl is shot dead by die Rote Armee Fraktion aka Baader-Meinhof Gruppe at the age of 51 in Buchholzstraße 39, Ippendorf, Bonn, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany.

The Ingrid Schubert Commando claims responsability. The main suspects in his murder are Rote Armee Fraktion members Barbara and Horst Meyer but there is no evidence. In the forensic examination of the projectiles a revolver of the Smith & Wesson type was identified, most likely the same gun with which West German business leader Hanns Martin Schleyer was executed.
