He was the first person sentenced to death by hanging under a congressional act that made it a capital offense to kill a federal agent. At the time of his execution he was still crippled from his wounds and had to be carried to the gallows on a stretcher and supported by deputy marshals.

Musician and painter Herman Hermanus Brood commits suicide by jumping from the roof at the age of 55 in Hilton Hotel, Apollolaan 138, Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Netherlands. Brood left a note stating "Party on. I'll be seeing you."
