One year before his execution while on death row, Babbitt was awarded a Purple Heart medal for the wounds he had received at the Battle of Khe Sanh, Vietnam in 1968. Babbitt refused his last meal and asked that the $50 allotted be given to homeless Vietnam veterans.

Double murderer Michael Lee McBride is executed by lethal injection at the age of 38 in Huntsville Prison, 815 12th Street, Huntsville, Texas, United States. As the lethal drugs began taking effect McBride said: "Pretty cool, I feel it in the back of my throat. Bye."
