Medical photographer Janet Parker dies of smallpox at the age of 40 in Catherine-de-Barnes Isolation Hospital, Solihull, West Midlands, United Kingdom. Parker was accidently infected by a mislaid sample of the virus at the University of Birmingham Medical School. She fell ill on 11 August and was placed in quarantaine on 20 August. Parker became the last person to die of smallpox.
