On 15 March Oberholtzer was savagely raped by The Grand Dragon of the Realm of the Indiana Ku-Klux-Klan, David Curtis Stephenson. An examination of Oberholtzer's body later revealed deep bite wounds were on her face, neck, breasts, back, legs, ankles, and tongue. She died from a staph infection from the bites plus kidney failure from the mercury poisoning.

Accountant and Home Army resistance member Ryszard Siwiec dies of injuries due to self-immolation on 8 September at the age of 59 in Stadion Dziesięciolecia, Warszawa, Województwo Mazowieckie, Poland. Siwiec was the first person to commit suicide by self-immolation in protest against the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia.
