McLaren's Can-Am car crashed on the Lavant Straight just before Woodcote corner. The rear bodywork came adrift at speed making the loss of aerodynamic downforce destabilising the car, which spun, left the track and hit a bunker used as a flag station.

War leader Abdel Hakim Mohamed Amer commits suicide by an overdose of medication at the age of 48 in Caïro, Al Qahirah, Egypt. Amer was approached by high-ranking Egyptian officers and was given a choice to stand trial for treason, which would inevitably have ended with his conviction and execution, or die an honourable death by taking poison. Amer chose the latter option and received a full military burial.
