United Airlines Flight 93 departed Newark International Airport in New Jersey at 8:42 a.m. en route to San Francisco International Airport with a crew of seven and 37 passengers, not including four hijackers. The hijacking began at 09:28. A passenger revolt began at 09:57 after the passengers voted on whether to act. At 10:03 the plane crashed into a field near a reclaimed coal strip mine. The three other hijackers were 20-year-old Ahmed al-Haznawi, 24-year-old Ahmed al-Nami and 21-year-old Saeed al-Ghamdi.

22-year-old writer Françoise Sagan, originally Françoise Quoirez is involved in a car accident while driving her Aston Martin at 160 km/h in Milly-la-Forêt, Île-de-France, France. Sagan suffered multiple head and chest injuries and spent three days in a coma. For three months she was given Palfium 875, a morphine derivate, to ease her pain. She became addicted to it.
