Kosiński suffered from multiple illnesses towards the end of his life and he was under attack from journalists who accused him of plagiarism. By his late 50s he was suffering from an irregular heartbeat as well as severe physical and nervous exhaustion. His parting note read: "I am going to put myself to sleep now for a bit longer than usual. Call it Eternity."

Six members of the Alday family are raped, sodomised, beaten and shot dead by escaped prisoners Wayne Coleman, George Dungee and Carl and Billy Isaacs in Alday Farm, Donalsonville, Georgia, United States. The victims were Jerry Alday, his 25-year-old wife Mary, his father Ned, his brothers Chester and Jimmy, and uncle Aubrey. The fugitives were arrested a few days later in West Virginia.
