Sumner had disappeared in March 2002 and his skeleton was found by a woman who had become lost while walking her dog in April 2005. His sister Patricia Jones told the court that her brother had spoken of taking his own life and she confirmed there had been three previous attempts.

42-year-old serial killer Donald Henry Gaskins, originally Donald Henry Parrott aka Pee Wee Gaskins aka the Meanest Man in America is arrested when criminal associate Walter Neeley confessed to police that he had witnessed Gaskins killing 28-year-old Dennis Bellamy and 15-year-old Johnny Knight in Sumter, South Carolina, United States. On 4 December Gaskins led police to land he owned in Prospect where police discovered the bodies of eight of his victims.
