 581 Die in SS Grandcamp explosion and fire in Port of Texas City, Texas City, Texas, United States. The SS Grandcamp's cargo of approximately 2.300 tons of ammonium nitrate detonated due to a fire and caused a subsequent chain-reaction of further fires and explosions in other ships and nearby oil-storage facilities.
