Sumner had disappeared in March 2002 and his skeleton was found by a woman who had become lost while walking her dog in April 2005. His sister Patricia Jones told the court that her brother had spoken of taking his own life and she confirmed there had been three previous attempts.

Writer, thief and political activist Jean Genet dies of throat cancer at the age of 76 in Jack's Hôtel Room #205, 19 Avenue Stéphen-Pichon, XIIIe, Paris, Île-de-France, France.

Genet is buried in the Spanish Cemetery in Larache, Morocco.
