Willingham was convicted and executed for the murder of his three young children 2-year-old Amber Louise and 1-year-old twins Karmon Diane and Kameron Marie by arson at the family home in Corsicana, Texas on 23 December 1991. Since his execution significant controversy has arisen over the interpretation of the evidence that was used to convict him of arson and murder.

Student and hero of the Lithuanian resistance Romas Kalanta aka The Young Man with the Mesmerizing Eyes commits suicide by self-immolation at the age of 19 in Laisvės Alėja, Kaunas, Trakai Voivodeship, Lithuania. Kalanta's suicide was a protest against the occupation of Lithuania by the USSR.
