On the night of 24 February 1852 Gogol burned some of his manuscripts which contained most of the second part of 'Dead Souls'. He explained this as a mistake, a practical joke played on him by the Devil. Soon thereafter he took to bed, refused all food and died in great pain nine days later.

56-year-old serial killer Andrei Chikatilo aka The Rostov Ripper is sentenced to death plus 86 years for 52 murders and five counts of sexual assault by Judge Akubzhanov in Courtroom Number 5, ul. Socialist, 164/35, Rostov, Rostov Oblast, Russia. Chikatilo kicked his bench across his cage when he heard the verdict and began shouting abuse. However, when given an opportunity to make a speech in response to the verdict he again remained silent.
