Günther carried two 20l milk canisters filled with petrol and poured them over himself before the altar while 300 people were attending mass. He then spread his arms and let the candles ignite his robe. Two more spare canisters exploded as the floor around the altar was covered in flames.

Painter and printmaker Francisco Goya born as Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes dies of complications from a stroke at the age of 82 in Bordeaux, Aquitaine, France. Goya's body was later re-interred in Spain.
