Beets was convicted to death for shooting her fifth husband Jimmy Don Beets on 6 August 1983. Also found buried in a garage were the remains of another Beets' husband, Doyle Wayne Barker. Beets did not request a final meal.

A Syrian general practitioner is wounded by a bomb sent by 46-year-old xenophobic serial bomber Franz Fuchs in Stronsdorf, Niederösterreich, Austria. In all Fuchs sent out three mail bombs that day. At the Poysdorf post office 71-year-old Maria Loley is injured while opening a package. In Mistelbach a South-Korean doctor escapes another mail bomb.
