Russian monarch Catherine the Great born as Princess Sophie Friederike Auguste von Anhalt-Zerbst-Dornburg dies of a stroke at the age of 67 in Winter Palace, St. Petersburg, Northwestern Federal District, Russia. Combined with the knowledge of Catherine's globally known sexual appetite and her love for the equestrian, a rumor circulated that she died when the harness of her horse broke that was positioned to be held above her.
