All 40 of the terrorists were killed and up to 204 hostages died during the siege due to poisoning by gas pumped into the ventilation system during the rescue operation. The identity of the gas was never disclosed, although it is believed by some to have been a fentanyl derivative such as carfentanil.

51-year-old mathematician and serial bomber Theodore Kaczynski aka The Unabomber mails Bomb #13 to Geneticist Charles Epstein of University of California, Sacramento, and Bomb #14 to Professor David Gelernter of Yale University, New Haven in Oakland, California, United States. Bomb #13 and #14 were the first ones sent after a six years break.
