All 40 of the terrorists were killed and up to 204 hostages died during the siege due to poisoning by gas pumped into the ventilation system during the rescue operation. The identity of the gas was never disclosed, although it is believed by some to have been a fentanyl derivative such as carfentanil.

Adolf Hitler's half-niece and supposed lover Geli Angela Maria Raubal commits suicide by a shot in her lung at the age of 23 in Prinzregentenplatz 16, München, Bayern, Germany. Raubal shot herself in Hitler's apartment with Hitler's Walther 7.65 pistol.
