Second Secretary-General of the United Nations Dag Hjalmar Agne Carl Hammarskjöld dies in a Douglas DC-6B plane crash at the age of 56 in Ndola, , Zambia. Hammarskjöld and fifteen others perished in the crash. The circumstances of the incident are still not clear. There is some recent evidence that suggest the plane was shot down.
