Science fiction writer Alice Bradley Sheldon aka James Tiptree Jr. commits suicide a shot in the head at the age of 72 in McLean, Virginia, United States. Sheldon shot dead her invalid and blind 84-year-old husband Huntingdon in his sleep first. Sheldon herself was suffering health issues caused by a lifetime of smoking.
