Amundsen's team included Norwegian pilot Leif Dietrichson, French pilot René Guilbaud, and three more Frenchmen. It is believed that the plane crashed in fog in the Barents Sea and that Amundsen and his crew were killed in the crash, or died shortly afterward.

Satirist, essayist, political pamphleteer, poet, cleric and Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral Jonathan Swift dies of unknown causes at the age of 78 in Dublin, Leinster, Ireland. In 1742 Swift suffered great pain from the inflammation of his left eye which swelled to the size of an egg; five attendants had to restrain him from tearing out his eye.
