Satirist, essayist, political pamphleteer, poet, cleric and Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral Jonathan Swift dies of unknown causes at the age of 78 in Dublin, Leinster, Ireland. In 1742 Swift suffered great pain from the inflammation of his left eye which swelled to the size of an egg; five attendants had to restrain him from tearing out his eye. |
