Engineer and chemist Thomas Midgley aka the One-Man Environmental Disaster dies of strangulation at the age of 55 in Worthington, Ohio, United States. Midgley accidently strangled himself with an elaborate system of ropes and pulleys he designed himself to lift him from his bed since he was struck by poliomyelitis in 1940.
