Freund and her 30-year-old lover John Diel were sitting in Diel's car preparing to drive to a dance hall after having seen the movie Rocky. Three gunshots penetrated the car at about 12:40 a.m. In a panic Diel drove away for help. He suffered minor superficial injuries but Freund died several hours later at the hospital.

185 Die in suburban service train derailment in Aracaju, Sergipe, Brazil. The train was carrying about 1000 passengers. Grief-stricken relatives came to the scene and nearly lynched the surviving locomotive engineer who took refuge in a police station. The train conductors also fled.
