He broke through the ceiling into the apartment of the chief jailer who was out for the evening with his wife, changed into street clothes from the jailer's closet and walked out the front door to freedom.

Murderer Joe Lee is executed by Old Sparky at the age of 83 in Virginia State Penitentiary, Richmond, Virginia, United States. Lee claimed to be 83 years old but the court had reason to believe he was more realistically 68 years old. Nevertheless Lee is still the oldest person executed in Virginia's electric chair.
