Of the four Mk28-type hydrogen bombs the B-52G carried, three were found on land. The non-nuclear explosives in two of the weapons detonated upon impact with the ground resulting in the contamination of a 2 km2 area by plutonium. The fourth, which fell into the Mediterranean Sea, was recovered intact after a 2 1⁄2-month-long search.

Would-be assassin of Adolf Hitler Claus Philipp Maria Schenk von Stauffenberg is executed by the firing squad at the age of 37 in Bendlerblock, Tiergarten, Berlin, Berlin, Germany. Apart from von Stauffenberg, his aide 1st Lieutenant Werner von Haeften, General Friedrich Olbricht and Colonel Albrecht Mertz von Quirnheim were also executed in the courtyard of the Bendlerblock, which was lit by the headlights of a truck.
