McAfee was arrested in Spain over tax evasion charges on 6 October 2020. The charges were announced shortly after the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission revealed that it had brought civil charges against McAfee and that he could face 30 years in prison if convicted in the criminal matter.

Falun Gong practicer Yulan Mei dies in police detention after she was fatally injured during force-feeding at the age of 44 in Beijing, Hebei, China. On 17 May Mei was force-fed by an inmate who had no medical skills at all, the feeding tube was wrongly inserted causing serious injuries. After she returned to her cell she had a headache and started to vomit blood, lapsed into a coma and never regained consciousness again. Mei was the 19th Falun Gong member to die in police custody.
