Expected to live only a few weeks due to his advanced tuberculosis Metesky had to be carried into the hospital. After a year and a half of treatment, his health had improved, and a newspaper article written fourteen years later described the 68-year-old Metesky as "vigorous and healthy looking".

Artist Amedeo Clemente Modigliani dies of tubercular meningitis due to execessive alcohol and drug abuse at the age of 36 in Hôpital de la Charité, VIe, Paris, Île-de-France, France. When Modigliani died his twenty-one-year-old fiencée Jeanne Hébuterne was eight months pregnant with their second child. A day later Hébuterne was taken to her parents' home. There, inconsolable, she threw herself out of a fifth-floor window, killing herself and their unborn child.
