There were belated reports of a UFO sighting in Australia on the night of Valentich's disappearance. However, the Department of Transport was sceptical a UFO was behind Valentich's disappearance. According to his father Guido, Valentich was an ardent believer in UFOs and had been worried about being attacked by them.

 Hijacker D.B. Cooper jumps from the back of a Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 305 Boeing 727-051 after securing 200.000 $ ransom and four parachutes in Mount St. Helens, Washington, United States. Despite an extensive manhunt and protracted FBI investigation D.B. Cooper has never been located or identified. The case remains the only unsolved air piracy in commercial aviation history.
