Falling was a passenger in a car driven by her 19-year-old stepsister Betty Jean Daniels. The two women had taken the baby for routine vaccinations. On the way home Daniels left them alone to pick up some groceries. When she returned to the car Falling announced "The baby ain’t breathing."

Mary Margaret Guilfoyle is stabbed to death by serial killer Herbert Mullin aka The Hippie Killer at the age of 24 in Empire Grade, Santa Cruz, California, United States.

Mullin then dissected Guilfoyle's body and scattered her remains alongside a hillside road.
