Vollmer's death was ruled a culpable homicide, after Mexican police investigated and Burroughs gave several contradictory versions of events. Burroughs was held in custody on murder charges for two weeks before being released on bail. In absentia he was convicted of manslaughter and received a two-year suspended sentence.

Film and stage director John Richard Schlesinger dies of complications from a stroke at the age of 77 in Desert Hospital, 1150 N Indian Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, California, United States. Schlesinger had been on a life-support system after a stroke in December 2000.
