King was signing copies of his book 'Stride Toward Freedom' when Curry said "I've been looking for you for five years" and stabbed him in the chest with a ivory handled steel letter opener. When the ambulance arrived King was sitting in a chair with the letter opener protruding from his chest. At Harlem Hospital Chief of Surgery Aubre de Lambert Maynard attempted to pull out the letter opener but cut his glove on the blade. A surgical clamp was finally used to pull out the blade.

20 Die in private psychiatric hospital fire in Clinique Saint-François-d'Assise, Haut-Carcé, Bruz, Bretagne, France. All the patients, mostly depressed young women, were severely sedated and locked up behind barred windows. 30 patients were heavily burned. The fire started when a nurse, who also died in the disaster, helped escape a patient who set fire to solitary confinement room 22 and forgot to close the door.
