Abbott was released on parole in June 1981 despite the misgivings of prison officials. Abbott was given a sentence of three to 23 years for stabbing another inmate in a Utah prison. In 1971 his sentence was increased by 19 years after he escaped and committed a bank robbery in Colorado. Norman Mailer supported Abbott's attempts to gain parole after he helped him publishing a collection of prison letters.

41-year-old poet and writer Oscar Wilde is convicted of 'committing acts of gross indecency with other male persons' and sentenced to two years hard labour in London, Greater London, United Kingdom. Judge Justice Wills described the sentence, the maximum allowed, as "totally inadequate for a case such as this" and that the case was "the worst case I have ever tried". Wilde's response was "And I? May I say nothing, my Lord?"
