 In the largest prison escape in the United Kingdom, 38 Provisional Irish Republican Army prisoners armed with handguns hijack a prison lorry and smash their way out in Maze Prison, Lisburn, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom. Fifteen escapees were captured on the first day, including four who were discovered hiding underwater in a river near the prison using reeds to breathe.
