Darwin had been missing after a trip on the North Sea on 21 March 2002 and declared dead. On 23 July 2008 John and his wife Anne Darwin were both convicted of fraud. John was sentenced to six years and three months in prison.

Start of the trial against 29-year-old serial killer Joseph Vacher aka L’Eventreur du Sud-Est in Bourg-en-Bresse, Rhône-Alpes, France. Vacher entered the courtroom with "J'ai une balle dans la tête" written on a panel and shouting "Vive Jésus ! Vive Jeanne d'Arc".
