Bucklew had argued for months that the death penalty would qualify as cruel and unusual punishment due to blood-filled tumours that had grown in his head, neck and throat. He argued that a tumour on his neck could burst when given lethal injection and cause him to choke on his own blood.

 1159 Die in Tōya Maru ferry capsizing during Typhoon Marie in Tsugaru Strait, Hokkaidō, Japan. Of the 1309 passengers and crew on board only 150 people survived. Four other ferries sank in the same typhoon, making a total loss of life of 1430. More info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tōya_Maru |
