Zazzara's 44-year-old wife Maxine was awakened by her husband's murder and Ramirez beat her and bound her hands while demanding to know where her valuables were. While he ransacked the room Maxine escaped her bonds and retrieved a shotgun from under the bed, which was not loaded. An infuriated Ramirez shot her three times and mutilated her body by stabbing her several times. He gouged out her eyes and placed them in a jewelry box that he took with him.

22-year-old outlaw, gunfighter and folk icon Billy the Kid, originally Henry McCarty aka William H. Bonney aka Kid Antrim escapes from the County Jail in Lincoln County Courthouse, Lincoln, New Mexico, United States. Billy shot and killed deputy James Bell and Bob Olinger, obtained a horse and rode out of town singing.
