The rope that was used to hang Williams was too long, and when Williams hit the floor after dropping through the trap door on the gallows, three police officers were required to hold Williams up by the rope for over 14 minutes until he finally died of strangulation. The circumstances of Williams' execution helped lead to the abolition of capital punishment in Minnesota.

The concentration camp of Dachau is liberated by units of 3rd Battalion, 157th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Felix L. Sparks and the 222nd Infantry Regiment of the 42nd Rainbow Infantry Division soldiers led by Brigadier General Henning Linden in Konzentrationslager Dachau, Dachau, Bayern, Germany. Since 1945 adherents of the 42nd and 45th Division versions of events have argued over which unit was the first to liberate Dachau.
