Pakistani-British businessman and drug trafficker Akmal Shaikh is executed by lethal injection at the age of 53 in Xishan Detention Centre, Ürümqi, Xinjiang Uyghur, China. On 12 September 2007 Shaikh was arrested at Ürümqi Airport carrying 4 kilograms (9 lb) of heroin of 84.2% purity hidden in a compartment of his case which was "practically empty" but for a few clothes.
