29-year-old murderer William Kemmler aka John Hart in Buffalo, New York, United States. Kemmler was sentenced to death and became the first man to be executed by use of the electric chair, a device invented in 1881 by Buffalo dentist Alfred Southwick which, after nine years of development and legislation, was ready for use.
