Chubbuck was doing a live newscast during her Suncoast Digest show and said "In keeping with Channel 40's policy of bringing you the latest in blood and guts, and in living color, you are going to see another first: an attempted suicide" and shot herself behind the left ear. Chubbuck was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead fourteen hours later.

Kidnapper and murderer Ferdi Paul Robert Ferdinand Elsas is hit by an excavator while riding his bike at the age of 67 in Vorden, Gelderland, Netherlands. Elsas died on arrival at Het Spittaal hospital in Zutphen.
